January in review

If my progress for the month were a report card, it’d probably be something like a B+.  But you wouldn’t know it looking at my winnings.

My only real goal for the month was to play 33,000 or more hands.  I actually came up short there, surprisingly.  Just as I wrote, I was actually on pace for 40k+ hands this month, but during the last half I started to slip up and got a bit lazy with my grinding.  I played a grand total of 32,324 hands, which I guess isn’t a tremendous failure, but I could have overshot my goals by a huge margin had I continued to work as hard as I should have.

Of those 32k hands, most were at 200nl, but I played 400nl whenever the games were good, or didn’t have 20-player waiting lists.  Lucky for me, I ran like a god at 400nl, while maintaining a solid winrate at 1/2 to boost.  A very short and very unsuccessful run at 100nl HU knocked me back a bit, but in the end, I believe this turned out to be my best month ever.  It’s hard to say because the dollar value HEM is showing isn’t taking into account that many of my games were played at GBP and euro tables.  Still waiting on HEM v1.10.2 to fix that.

It’s easy to get caught up with  upswings and think you’re a much better player than you really are (faithful readers of my blog know this about me all too well), but the most important thing I took from this month is that 400k or 500k hands for 2010 is easily doable, and as long as I run remotely well, it will be a record year for me.  I also ran CRAZY good in the all-in EV category, and while we all know that’s not the only indicator of luck, it’s still so significant that it’s safe to say I ‘ran good’ this month.  Even so, had I ran even in AIEV, I’d have had a solid ~$4k month, which I’m more than happy about.  I’ve also started chatting with Fredrik a lot more, and feel we’re on a similar plane in skill and knowledge level, so it’s really helping bouncing ideas back and forth and reviewing videos and ebooks.  2010 is looking to be a good year :D

Next month will be a bit of a challenge in that I’ll be gone for a week earlier in the month on my trip to either Mexico or Costa Rica (still undecided), and I’ll either have to grind on my unfit-for-poker laptop while I’m traveling, and/or grind a ton more when I’m in Toronto to make up for the time I’ll have lost on the trip.

If I wasn’t traveling, my new goal for the month would be 40k or 45k hands.  With the trip, I’ll be happy if I can maintain my ‘minimum’ 33k.  March will involve a shit-ton of grinding as I’ll have the whole month to get hands in.

Biggest was like 9k early in my first move to 200nl. This past month totals somewhere over 10k depending on how the exchange goes. Either way I’m happy :)

    Thanks Delta, appreciate it!

Nice way to start the new year. Inspiring for an aspiring player as I followed your old blog somewhat through CC. Keep it up!
